Introduction to Great Works
The Honors Program strives to provide students the opportunity to relish some of the great creations of human history. The Great Works requirement encourages students to experience a number of these works in six categories: art, film, literature, music, science, and theatre. The students also write essay responses that reflect upon and briefly analyze these experiences. writing on either two shorter experiences or one more in depth within each of the six categories. Honors classes and the Honors Great Works card support students in completing these experiences and responses; continue through this section of the site for more information.
The record of these experiences and the total 12 (2 shorter responses for the 6 categories) or longer 6 (1 longer response for the 6 categories) written responses will be turned in with the Honors Portfolio, usually in the semester that the student will be graduating. It is suggested that Honors students create a goal to complete a regular number of experiences each semester rather than rushing to experience and respond to the bulk of Great Works in the final stages of undergraduate time at BYU.
